After a rough start to the season, Novak Djokovic is back on track with a 7th Wimbledon title victory on Sunday. This victory takes the Serbian’s tally of grand slams to 21, one ahead of Roger Federer and 1 behind Rafael Nadal. Djokovic was deported from Australia earlier this year, preventing him from defending his Australian Open crown.
His record-breaking victory, however, will see him slip to the 7th rank, his lowest in 4 years. This is due to the ATP’s decision to strip Wimbledon of ranking points this year. The ATP took this drastic measure in response to the All England Club’s decision to ban Russian players from competing, a decision Djokovic spoke against.
‘Djokovic is better than Nadal and Federer’: Childhood mentor
Novak Djokovic’s famous mentor from when he was 12 years old, Nikola Pilic spoke after the 21st Grand Slam title won by the Serb on the Wimbledon grass. And according to him, Nole must simply be considered a better player than Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
Pilic himself is a former Croatian tennis player who won a US Open doubles title with Frenchman Pierre Barthès. His best singles performance at a Grand Slam tournament came in 1973 when he reached the final of the French Open, losing to Ilie Năstase in straight sets.
He runs a tennis academy in Oberschleißheim near Munich where he resides. Players such as Michael Stich, Novak Djokovic, Ernests Gulbis, and Anastasija Sevastova developed and came through the Pilic academy. He claimed recently that Djokovic is better than Nadal and Federer considering all the criteria but also acknowledged Nadal’s achievements.

He was the world number one for 374 weeks, which is impressive.In addition, no one but him has won all the Grand Slam titles twice, and Novak has a positive face-to-face with almost all players.
