Frances Tiafoe easily defeated the up-and-coming Chinese teen Jerry Shang in straight sets (6-4, 6-4, 6-1) to book his place in the third round of the 2023 Australian Open. The American star’s highest result at the Grand Slam is the quarterfinals in 2019. Tiafoe continued his streak at Melbourne after winning the United Cup in Adelaide.  

The seventeenth seed triumphed, appreciating Shang’s immense talent, and showered him with compliments in the post-match interview. Shang became the youngest player to qualify for the tournament after Carlos Alcaraz in 2019. He is also the only player from his country to win a match at the Australian Open. Amazingly, his first attempt at the Grand Slam has been successful.

Tiafoe applauded the youngster on his talent and personality as well as mentioned how big of a fan he was. The Chinese teen has been receiving praise from fans and critics alike for his great performance despite his young age.

“He’s going to take all the money from all these dudes. He is going to have a career that’s going to be special. He is going to be a problem. I’m a big fan of his. Super nice guy as well.” Tiafoe joked.

Tiafoe is set to play against Russian tennis player Karen Khachanov, who is seeded 18 in the tournament. The third round of the Australian Open 2023 is going to commence on Friday in Melbourne, among the raucous crowd and blazing heat.

Jerry Shang is a one-of-a-kind jewel, whose talent shows great potential to grow. Dante Bottini was the one who spotted his talent and believed in his ability to excel. At the mere age of 17, the player has already broken records and showcased that he is someone to watch out for. Despite being the new talk of the town, the player is down-to-earth, friendly, and hard-working.

Shang improved and learned at the IMG Academy in Florida, where he practiced amongst the top players in the world. Denis Shapovalov is one of those players to shower praise on the youngster. Shang’s smart playing style and ability to act in technicality is also special characteristic. Jerry Shang is surely going to be a force to reckon with in the future

Looking at the new generation of oncoming tennis players, it is apparent that tennis is going to enter a different but much more interesting phase with the eventual departure of the Big three trio. Fans and critics both are looking forward to an even more competitive and exciting sport in the near future.
