Daniil Medvedev has been out of the tour since his quarterfinals appearance in the Miami Open. He has been recovering from the hernia removal procedure and is looking for a good run at the Roland-Garros. Daniil Medvedev is not at his best on the clay, and with this break due to the surgery, he returns with a new mindset and game plan for the red dirt.

Medvedev is currently playing the Geneva Open in preparation for the French Open and he has been practicing a lot post-recovery. Medvedev’s coach Gilles Cervara said: “Roland-Garros is an objective in itself, confirms Cervara. “We are going to Geneva to have as many benchmarks as possible given the situation. The idea is to do at least as well as last year.”

He returned to high-intensity tennis on the clay courts of the Mouratoglou Academy, against players like Holger Rune, Gianluga Mager, etc. He will be looking for some more success at the French Open.

“He’s calmer this year, it’s easier to train him,” Cervara told TennisMajors. “Daniil is aware that returning to clay forces him to be more tolerant. He releases a bit of pressure, therefore, even if he knows that this surface makes him less efficient against certain types of players.”

With all that said Daniil Medvedev still reached the quarterfinals in Paris last year without dropping a set. His coach further drew a comparison to Pete Sampras

“Daniil is like Sampras. When he arrives in Paris, he hopes for dry weather so that the ball goes faster. A higher rebound makes their game more efficient,” says Cervara. Hopefully, Medvedev’s change in thought process and intensity would bring him more success on clay as the Russian gears up for a strong comeback.
