“He needs jail” Daniil Medvedev’s racket smash on the chair umpire’s microphone triggers fans in the audience as well as on social media
Daniil Medvedev hits the chair umpire's microphone
World No. 3 Daniil Medvedev engaged with the French crowd once again during the second-round encounter at the 2022 Paris Masters. Playing against Australia’s Alex de Minaur, Medvedev was playing in his first match following a bye in the first round.
Medvedev was the runner-up last year losing to Novak Djokovic in the finals in what was a repeat of the 2021 US Open finals. Fresh from the title in Vienna, Medvedev expected a better start but de Minaur was quick off the blocks and hammered the first blow to win the first set and eventually the match.
With de Minaur winning the first set 4-6, the Russian was visibly frustrated and the chair umpire’s microphone took the brunt of it. Medvedev smacked the microphone with his racket before proceeding towards his bench for the changeover as boos echoed in the stadium from the spectators.
Daniil Medvedev criticized on Twitter, will fall in rankings owing to the early defeat
Medvedev’s defeat to de Minaur will be another blow to his ranking points as he was the runner-up last year. Ranked 3rd at the start of the tournament, he will now fall to the 5th spot which could affect his seeding at the next week’s 2022 ATP Finals where he will defend his runner-up’s points from the 2021 edition.
With another outburst on the court, fans were not happy with the former World No. 1. While the spectators at the stadium booed and whistled him to show their oppose to his actions, fans across the world took to Twitter to express their opinions on it.
