“He started an amazing trend” Serena Williams indicates a possible comeback by citing Tom Brady’s NFL return as an inspiration
Tom Brady and Serena Williams
Serena Williams said goodbye to her professional tennis career after the conclusion of her run at the US Open 2022. She was defeated by Australia’s Ajla Tomjlanovic in a thrilling three-set match. Before suffering an agonizing loss to the Australian, Serena Williams beat World No.2 Anett Kontaveit in the second round and Danka Kovinic in the first round.
Williams has always known she was going to retire at her home tournament. In a personal essay for Vogue, she cited family as a reason for her retirement. She said, “Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family. I don’t think it’s fair. If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family.” Now Serena Williams is speaking out on a possible comeback.
I think retirement is something that is super earned: Serena Williams’ thoughts on a possible return to tennis
Williams is commenting on a possible comeback. She said Tom Brady has made room for comebacks after he announced his return to NFL just 40 days after his retirement. When Jimmy Fallon asked her about a possible return she said, “Tom Brady started an amazing trend. That’s what I want to say.”
“I think retirement is something that is super earned and that people work really hard for. I feel like I’m at an age where I definitely have a lot more to give and there’s a lot more that I want to do so I’m not going to be relaxing, there’s so much more for me.”
She then added, “I feel like it’s more of an evolution of Serena. There’s so many things that I’ve been wanting to do for so many years and I’ve had such a passion for tennis for so long that I’ve never done them. Now it’s time for me to start to enjoy those things.”
