American tennis legend Venus Williams’ hopes to play her 22nd Australian Open were shattered due to an injury suffered in the ASB Classics in New Zealand. Former World No. 1 was awarded a wildcard to participate in the tournament. The unfortunate news has broken the heart of Williams and her fans as well.
The seven-time Grand Slam singles winner was playing well before suffering the injury. In a rain-impacted match, Williams defeated her compatriot Katie Volynets 7-6, 6-2 in the first round of the tournament. The 42-year-old Williams was looking set to have a great time in Melbourne after Auckland.
The news was shared by the official Twitter handle of the Australian Open. “Venus Williams has withdrawn from the Australian Open due to an injury sustained at the ASB Classic in New Zealand,” the tweet read. The tweet also announced that Australia’s Kim Birrell will be awarded Williams’ wildcard place.

Fans on social media react to news of Venus Williams’ withdrawal
Social media users joined hands to support her favorite star Venus Williams following the disappointing news, some believing that it might have been her last showing in Melbourne. “A real shame,” one of the fans wrote. “Hope she makes it to play at Wimbledon,” wrote another.
Some users questioned the Australian Open’s decision to give a wildcard to Kim Birrell. Australian Maddison Inglis or Czech Linda Noskova would have been a better choice, fans countered. Others also questioned the original decision to give a wildcard to Venus Williams.
Fans were waiting to get one of the last glimpses of the older one of the celebrated Williams sisters. The injury whose specifics are not provided by Williams or the Australian Open could eventually draw a curtain on the glorious career of the 42-year-old. The younger sister, Serena has already retired this year following her US Open outing.
