The Danish young gun Holger Rune suffered a shocking loss in the first round of the US Open 2023 against unseeded Spanish player Roberto Carballes Baena. Post this, Rune called out the US Open authorities in the post-game press conference for allotting Court No.5, despite him being the 4th seed. He also said that upon questioning, the organizers failed to provide him with a reasonable explanation for doing so.
“It’s not difficult, but it’s different. You’re more close to all the people. It’s a nice atmosphere. So, I mean, it’s no problem with the court. I just didn’t expect to play on that court, “ said the Dane as he explained how a different court could have affected the atmosphere.
He also established that it should always be the case that a player gets the benefits they deserve for climbing up the World rankings. Rune also said, “So I think that’s a normal way and it’s also how ATP, like, it’s how they do with all the players. But they didn’t do it with me here. That’s obviously disappointing, “ as he explained that these benefits did not apply to him in the tournament.
Rune also said he did not blame the court for his loss. He acknowledged that his opponent, Roberto Carballes Baena, did indeed play a very good game. The Dane also credited the Spaniard for playing an excellent performance.
Holger Rune upset by the treatment at the US Open

When asked in a press conference if he went in search of an explanation for being assigned Court 5 for his opening round, he said he did try to get information. “Yeah, of course I tried to get an explanation, and, I mean, obviously they said what we all know, that they, you know, put the Americans on the big court, which is totally fine, ” said the Dane.
He was satisfied with this explanation, saying the same thing happened in France with French players. However, “That’s not only the case here, that it’s only Americans playing on the big courts. That card didn’t really work, ” said Rune, baffled that this was not the case at Flushing Meadows. Rune mentioned it was not just Americans who were on the big court, but other seeded players as well.
“Then you try to ask more questions and they don’t answer you. It’s a little bit tough, ” said Holger as he explained how the authorities failed to answer further questions. He was a bit upset with the benefits reaching only selected players.
