People always look for external factors whenever a player performs poorly. Most of the time, these external factors are the player’s partner, especially girlfriends. In a similar way, Holger Rune‘s girlfriend, Caroline Donzella, has been facing criticism for his bad results. But the Danish have come to her rescue.
Rune’s performance has not been up to the mark recently. Ever since he lost in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, his performance at the ATP has been under scrutiny. He has been struggling to keep his head above the water.
Recently, he was seen participating at the Shanghai Masters, where he lost to Miomir Kecmanovic. Playing in the Stockholm Open today, he again lost to his opponent in the round of 32. It should be noted that he was playing as the No. 1 seed.
Many critics have linked his constant loss to his relationship. However, interestingly, Rune came to the defense and tried to waive off such rumors. In a video posted at Expressen, he said, “Caroline is not to blame for my poor sports performance. That is only my responsibility. People only want to look for external factors and blame others, but only I am responsible.”
Rune to be coached by Boris Becker
Holger Rune, currently ranked No. 6 in the world, has seen an ascent in the men’s ranks. He has dropped two places after a solid year, and his efforts are projected towards trying to reach new heights next year. There were rumors that the Danish would be coached by none other than the legendary Boris Becker. But now those rumors have turned true. It has been confirmed that the former German player will coach Rune.
“Holger is a rough diamond that needs polishing. I like his emotional outbursts. I’ve already coached a player who was sometimes not completely at his wits on the court: Novak Djokovic. But that’s allowed,” said Boris in an interview on Eurosports.
Boris Becker is best known for teaching Novak Djokovic, one of the greatest players of all time, from 2013 to 2016, during which time the Serb won six Grand Slams. “I love tennis, and if one of the best 20-year-olds in the world asks me if I would like to coach him, anyone who says no doesn’t have much to do with the sport,” said the German.
