Danish tennis sensation Holger Rune has recently been under some close calls with World No. 1 Novak Djokovic this season. Despite continuously faltering against the Serbian, World No. 8 recently talked about how much Djokovic has helped the likes of him and the young superstars.
Rune feels that where most of the youngsters missed out on the opportunity to watch Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, Djokovic has been kind enough to still stay in the pink of his form.
That’s not all; the tennis professional further opened up about how young players are always attracted by someone with experience, and for Djokovic to be able to do it at this age has become a helpful factor for many prospects.
I actually like that Novak is still here because you know for us young players to really see what the real world is in a way, what the real deal is, you know. If you never experience Roger [Federer], Rafa [Nadal] or Novak, I think we would miss something and I think Novak is like extremely high standard and I think for us so close to see that is very helpful.Rune said via Advantage Connors podcast
Holger Rune is in all praise for Novak Djokovic
Rune also called upon the fighting spirit of Novak Djokovic after his eventful 2023 season. The Danish professional was in all praise for the Serbian as he went on to accomplish yet another solid season with three Grand Slam titles (Australian Open, French Open, and US Open).
Interestingly, as per the young tennis phenomenon himself, Djokovic is still the man to beat in tennis at the moment. Despite his growing age, he is not stopping anytime soon, making things harder for everyone out there.
Rune said:
But the fact is, Novak is still winning three out of four Grand Slams this year. So we cannot say that he is gone because we need to beat him like not just one time but like every time.
Continuing further, he added:
I will try to beat him every time because if he keeps winning these big tournaments, why would he stop? I mean he is not going to stop until we beat him so the sooner we can get the level raised, the sooner we will take over.
Rune also talked about the level to which Djokovic has pushed the next generation of tennis stars, saying that in order to stop the veteran, the youngsters need to step up their game. Moreover, Rune feels that the only way Nole is going to stop is if he is pushed by other players and his reign as a top seed is taken over by someone else.
