Holger Rune has undoubtedly been one of the revelations of the season. The Danish teen sensation has made a quick rise to the top of the rankings and picked up three titles. Rune’s third title came at the 2022 Paris Masters where he defeated defending champion Novak Djokovic in the finals.

Djokovic was looking for his 7th Paris Masters title and his 39th Masters title in his 56th Masters finals. Rune had lost the first set but made a sensational comeback in the next two sets to claim the title and his first win over the Serb. Rune won the finals 3–6, 6–3, 7–5 to win his first career ATP-1000 title.

Rune was ranked 18th at the start of the tournament. Rune’s way to the title included 3 Grand Slam champions including the likes of Stan Wawrinka, Carlos Alcaraz, and Djokovic. His other three victims included Hubert Hurkacz, Andrey Rublev, and Felix-Auger Aliassime.

Rune with the title became the first man in history to defeat five Top-10 players on his way to the title. Barring Wawrinka, all other opponents of Rune were ranked at the Top-10 during the Paris Masters. This achievement of Rune takes him past a big list of legends including the likes of Roger Federer, Goran Ivanisevic, and Mats Wilander.

Rune with the win over Djokovic now leaps 8 places in the rankings to enter the Top 10. Come tomorrow, when the rankings are updated, Rune will be ranked World No. 10 entering the club for the first time. Rune’s jump will see Hurkacz slip down to World No. 11 owing to his second-round exit as well.

Likewise, Djokovic also moves down in the rankings as he loses 1000 ranking points failing to defend his title. The Serb will be the new World No. 8 tomorrow, a rank that he is likely to hold at the 2022 ATP Finals where he secured his berth solely on merit following his run in Paris.

With Carlos Alcaraz withdrawing from the ATP Finals, Rune’s chances for playing at the year-end championships have increased as he is in the alternates for the tournament in case a player is injured at the event.
