Danish teenager Holger Rune recently opened up about his goals for the 2023 season and reflected on a very positive 2022 season. Rune had a stellar 2022 season where he made it to the Top 10 for the first time in his life. He not only won his maiden tour title at an ATP 250 event but also became a Masters champion by beating Novak Djokovic in the final of the Paris Masters.
In an interview with Express Sport, Rune revealed that earlier this year, he increased his goal from the Top 25 to the Top 15 in the world. He said that he hasn’t made a plan for the 2023 season but knows for sure that he’ll focus on winning a Grand Slam. He has the self-belief of winning one and also aspires to be ranked inside the Top 5 of the ATP Rankings.
“Earlier this year I increased my goals from end year 25 to end year top 15,” Rune said. “I haven’t made my goal plan for 2023 yet, I normally do this with my coach in pre-season, but for sure now I will focus on winning Grand Slams. I believe I can. I have won ATP 250s, made the final of an ATP 500, and won a Masters 1000. And for sure a ranking inside the top five will be my goal for 2023, maybe even 1-3.”
Holger Rune looks back at his 2022 season
Reflecting back on the 2022 season, Rune said that his goal was to win an ATP 250 tournament and do well in Masters tournaments and Grand Slams.
“There is not one single tournament that wasn’t the first time for me. My goal was to win an ATP 250 and do as good as possible in Masters 1000s and Grand Slams. There is no easy way to success. It takes a lot of hard work to win tournaments and compete at the highest level,” he said.
He spoke about how he changed small aspects of his game every single day for a better purpose and in the end, it all reflected in his game towards the end. Rune had a terrific end to the year where he won the Stockholm Open, reached the final of the Swiss Indoors, and won the Paris Masters en route of which he defeated 5 Top 10 players consecutively.
“This meant that I had to do better in every single area of my game and also outside the court in terms of what I eat etc. There is not one thing that made 2022 a success. It’s all the small improvements in everything I do every day that made 2022 a good year for me,” he added.
