Danish tennis player Holger Rune is not having a great time on the court as the 20-year-old has not been able to win a major title so far in 2023. While Rune has managed an ATP 250 title and has reached a few finals as well as semifinals, the Dane has failed miserably in the last three tournaments he has played- the China Open, Shanghai Masters, and Stockholm Open.
While Rune crashed out after the second round at the China Open, he was knocked out of the Shanghai Masters and the Stockholm Open after a defeat in the first round. These early exits have not only dented his qualification chances for the year-end ATP Finals but have also left Rune in frustration. The emotions have come out in the form of outbursts which have further led to criticism.
Meanwhile, Rune’s mother, Aneke Rune has defended her 20-year-old son saying no one is perfect at this age. Aneke also blamed the media for talking sh*t about the youngster. She then justified Rune’s behavior by saying that pretending to be perfect when you are not gives a wrong impression.
“…You cannot please everybody if you say your opinion. Holger had a lot of sh*t in the media but he also has fans & followers in the media. I think if you look at other youngsters, nobody is perfect. If you try to pretend that as a young man, you’re absolutely perfect, then I think you give a wrong picture to all the other young kids that are 20 years old,” said Aneke Rune on the ATP Tennis podcast.

Holger Rune posts cryptic message after three early exits on the trot
While Holger Rune has not officially addressed the talks around his inconsistent performances and the three early exits on the trot, the Dane shared a cryptic post on social media aimed at his critics.
Rune shared a quote-like message wherein he talked about not forgetting who is by your side when nothing is going right. “Never forget who is there when the sun is not shining on you,” wrote Rune while sharing a picture of himself.
There are plenty of things happening around Rune. After struggling for months with his back, finally, when Rune got it fixed and hoped to make a fresh start, the Dane now seems to have lost his touch. Rune is not able to bring his A game, resulting in a series of defeats.
While it seems like a technical flaw, it has more to do with Rune’s mental health. And for that, the Dane has sought help from Boris Becker. It is to be seen if Becker helps the Dane regain his lost touch and win the next few tournaments to bolster his qualification chances for the ATP Finals.
