Holger Rune’s rough patch in tournaments continues as he suffers a tragic and horrible exit from the 2023 Shanghai Masters in the second round itself. This, by far, was his worst elimination from any tournament this season and things have taken a very serious turn. In fact, many fans and haters alike have started sending threats to Rune and his family, following which the Danish star’s sister has had to issue a statement.
In individual games like tennis, where betting is extremely common, it is normal for the ones who lose their money to get infuriated when they suffer a loss due to a big player getting defeated in easy matches. That is exactly what happened after the match between Holger Rune and Brandon Nakashima of the USA in the second round of the Shanghai Masters.
Holger Rune’s sister, Alma Rune, issued a warning to the ones sending her family online threats. She made it very clear that they will be reported to the police. “Just to be very clear, threats against me and my family has and will be reported to the police. And for information the consequences are not milder because it’s online. And for all the other hateful messages.. please, it doesn’t hurt to try and be nice,” she said on her Instagram story.
Ben Nakashima defeated Holger Rune 6-0, 6-2 in straight sets. Moreover, the first set was a bagel, which made things even more humiliating for the Danish player. Rune has been consistently performing poorly in the last few tournaments. He suffered a Round-of-16 exit in the recently played China Open.
Holger Rune wants to reach the ATP Finals
Holger Rune had earlier wanted to end his season as soon as possible so that he could recover from his back injury properly. However, he recently revealed that he has two goals in sight – reaching the ATP finals and defending the 2022 Paris Open.
“One of my goals is to be able to reach the ATP Finals in Turin at the end of the year. I have to defend Paris, but above all, I really want to return because I have very good memories from last year. I played my best tennis there,” Rune said via ATP. The 20-year-old defeated Novak Djokovic in the final of the 2022 Paris Open, which was one of the best performances in his career so far.
