Stan Wawrinka again showed his class to win against strong Holger Rune in the third round of the ongoing Indian Wells Open. He beat the Danish player 6-2, 6(5)-7(7), 7-5. However, at the end of the match there was a heated exchange between the two players as they came towards the net for a handshake.

Here, Holger Rune asked Stan Wawrinka to give some opinion about him. However, the Swiss was in no mood for another bout of verbal exchange. Hence, he shrugged off the 19-year-old’s suggestion and walked away.

The two had met each other in the first round of the Paris Masters last year. On that occasion, Holger Rune had defeated the three-time Grand Slam champion 4-6, 7-5, 7(7)-6(3) to advance into the next round. However, after the match Stan Wawrinka called Holger Rune a “baby on the court”. Looks like the 19-year old has neither forgotten nor forgiven this incident.

Stan Wawrinka will play against Jannik Sinner in the fourth round of this prestigious tournament.

Stan Wawrinka has made giant strides this season. He was out of the Top 300 in the ATP rankings last season, but since then has made great progress. Although, he could not do much at the Australian Open, he has advanced into the later stages of every competition. He reached the quarter-finals of both ATP Rotterdam Open and Open 13 Provence. However, he lost on both occasions.

Holger Rune on the other hand is having a tough time. Since his victory at the Paris Masters, expectations were high coming into the 2023 season. However, until now, it has not played out the according to his expectations. He started his journey by participating in the Adelaide International 1 tournament but was knocked out in the first round.

The Danish player reached the fourth round of the Australian Open but in a marathon match lost to Andrey Rublev. He also reached the semi-final round of the Open Sud de France and Mexican Open but lost on both occassions. His journey in the Indian Wells Open this year is also over.

However, his verbal exchange with Stan Wawrinka has drawn attention of social media. Many are commenting on it. Here are a few reactions that came in.
