The wrist injury put Thiem out of contention for playing for 10 months, the one-time Grand Slam winner put his recovery time into travelling and attending many sporting events, and keeping a close on many tournaments as well, during his rehabilitation from his injury, Thiem got to watching the US Open and admitted that it was quite a different experience watching it and not playing in it.
Dominic Thiem names the two players that impressed him the most during his recovery period
Ever since his debut in 2011, Thiem has been known for his shot timings and sublime footwork, and the injury putting him on the sidelines definitely affected his game and ability to compete at the top, with time, however, the Austrian seems to be getting back to his best and the Swiss Open will be more proof of the same. During his recovery period, Thiem talked about how Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz were the two players that stood out for him.
Talking about Sinner, Thiem said, “I played against Jannik Sinner at an exhibition and hit with him at many tournaments, so I knew he was coming to the top and he was good, he has been there for a while and he will probably be even higher soon.“
On Alcaraz, he said, “I knew Carlos Alcaraz, but he made the big breakthrough when I was not there. But I saw him quite a lot because he won Umag and then he played in Kitzbuehel and he lost to an Austrian guy [Alexander Erler] and I saw that whole match. You could see it was not going to take long for him to break through. You could see he was going to be in the Top 10.“
“Hopefully I will play them soon as it is always exciting to face new players as I have faced most of the guys already and know them quite well. I can imagine it is not that fun to play against Alcaraz. It must be really hard!” Thiem added further in his interview with the ATP Tour.
