Former World No. 1 Andy Murray has been off to a poor start in 2024. The Briton is yet to win a match having lost all three of his encounters so far. His latest loss came in the first round of the ongoing 2024 Open Sud de France in Montpellier.
The Briton lost to local boy and Tour veteran Benoit Paire. The Frenchman won the tie 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-3 to register his first win on the Tour in over 18 months. The defeat to Paire was followed by heavy booing for the World No. 49 who was expectedly stunned by the crowd reception.
With only 1 win in his last 10 Tour matches, it is certainly a tense time for the three-time Grand Slam title winner. There’s no denying the calibre and talent he possesses but playing with a metal hip at the age of 36 certainly has its challenges.
Taking a sum of all of this, BBC Scotland published an article on 30th January. They talked about this being the right time for Murray to retire and not tarnish his legacy. The article was quick to reach the Briton who gave a fitting reply to the publishers for advising without being asked to.
Murray received a lot of support for his answer and former US Open winner Andy Roddick was also one of them. Roddick took to his Twitter handle to show his backing for the Briton and called out BBC Scotland for their unwarranted article.
Preach! Imagine telling an accomplished iconic adult your opinion on what they should choose for work and when they should do it …. This is such a dumb, thirsty article. Can’t take a legacy away. Accomplishment lives forevertweeted Roddick.
A couple of crucial months await Andy Murray
While he continues to shut down irrelevant opinions on social media, Murray will be eager to return to action. He is confirmed to play in the 2024 Qatar Open in Doha alongside old pal Rafael Nadal.
With the event in Doha still nearly three weeks away, there remains an uncertainty if Murray will make a last-minute appearance at any event before that. With his ranking points tally just under 1000, he will look to make the most of the hardcourt season.
March as always will have only the Sunshine Double with both events offering 1000-points each. Seeing the trend of the previous seasons, one can expect him to skip the clay season. Or, he might play in very few events in hopes of scoring a few extra points.
The slowness of clay is certainly risky for the Briton. He’s likely to show smartness to avoid it. With a possible absence from the Tour, it won’t be a surprise if Murray downgrades to the Challenger level to remain fit. His focus will remain on the Grass season with the Wimbledon dream still on for the two-time former champ.
