“How can he not be there?” John McEnroe questions Novak Djokovic’s absence and wants him to play at the US Open

John McEnroe and Novak Djokovic

As things stand, 21-time grand slam champion Novak Djokovic isn’t allowed to enter the USA due to the vaccination mandate and hence will most likely miss the US Open. This is a shame for the tennis fraternity as Djokovic is not only one of the greats of the game, but also the most in-form player on the tour.

He won his 7th Wimbledon title a few weeks ago and in the process, won his 21st major title too. He is just one major away from equaling Rafael Nadal’s record of 22 major titles. But it looks like he will have to wait till the next year to gun for the elusive 22nd major title given his vaccination status.

American legend John McEnroe can’t digest the fact that the best player in the world will have to miss the US Open for such a reason. In a recent interview, McEnroe said that they will have to find a way to get Djokovic to play in the US Open. He then questioned how can he not be there despite winning Wimbledon.

“I mean, we have to find a way to get Novak into the US Open,” he told tennis365. “How can he not be there? He has just won Wimbledon, he is a great champion and he should be in the US Open.”

McEnroe added that he doesn’t agree with Djokovic’s decision to not get vaccinated but he respects it. He said that he is one of the fittest guys in the world and that not having him will be a shame. Given all the hype around him and Nadal battling for the GOAT spot, it is a shame that he will have to miss the US Open at this stage.

“I don’t agree with his decision not to get vaccinated, but I respect it. He is one of the fittest guys in the world and everything he puts into his body, he is watching carefully,” he said.

“Now we are saying that because of his choice, he can’t play at the US Open. I mean, come on. He has already been deported from Australia for the same reason and here we are again. I hope someone finds a way to sort this out. It’s crazy that Novak misses the US Open at this stage.”
