21-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal is undoubtedly one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Having tuned Pro in 2001, the Spaniard over the course of his illustrious two-decade-long career, Nadal has broken and created numerous records that have ensured him a special in tennis history.

While Nadal has had many rivalries over his career, none of them have matched the one he has with 20-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic with the pair having met the most number of times by any pair in the Open Era. They have clashed a total of 58 times over their respective careers and have played out splendid matches every time they have faced each other on the court.

In 58 meetings that the two players have contested, Djokovic has won 30 of those duels while Nadal emerged victorious in 28 matches. The 58th meeting between them took place in the semi-finals of the 2021 French Open where Nadal was the defending champion but lost in 4-sets to Djokovic who went on to win the title, his 19th Grand Slam title and 2nd French Open title.

In hardcourt matches, Novak has a 16-5 record against the Mallorcan while having a 4-1 record in indoor hardcourt matches. In grasscourt events, the spoils have been shared between the two players with the record currently at 2-2. In claycourt matches, Nadal leads the Serbian 19-8 while also holding a 1-0 lead on matches played on carpet.

Nadal’s record on clay has been unmatched with the Spaniard currently being 488-46 on the surface. During the 2005 clay season, he was 50-2 on the surface as he also went on to win the 2005 French Open title that year. In the 2006 season, he was unbeaten throughout the clay season going 26-0, a feat he repeated in 2010 as well going 22-0 during the Golden Swing.

Nadal has played in 70 finals on the clay surface of which he has won 62 and lost just 8. Of the 62 titles, 13 came at the French Open, 11 at the Monte-Carlo Masters, 5 at the Madrid Masters and 10 at the Rome Masters, all being tournament records in themselves. At the ATP-500 Barcelona Open, he is a 12-time champion, just another feather in his cap.
