“I am a perfectionist” Iga Swiatek clinches her 30th consecutive win of the season after a dominating victory over Alison Riske in the French Open
Iga Swiatek
World No. 1 Iga Swiatek continues her dominant run in the season as she takes down World No. 43 Alison Riske in the second round of the 2022 French Open. Swiatek won the match 6-0, 6-2 in just 61 minutes to clinch her 30th consecutive win for the season and also her 16th match at the Grand Slam in her 18th appearance.
As always, Iga took charge of the match very early on breaking Riske’s service in the second game of the match and the American’s first service game and maintained it throughout the first set to drop a bagel, having dropped one in the first round match as well. Iga needed just 22 minutes to clinch the first set while the second set was taken home in 39 minutes as Riske managed to take away 2 games.
Riske had 2 aces and 2 double faults while Iga had 1 of each. Iga created 9 breakpoint opportunities for herself winning 5 of those while making sure Riske did not have any breakpoint chances. Iga had 23 winners and 15 unforced errors to Riske’s 6 winners and 14 unforced errors with the American also making 2 double faults to Iga’s solitary double fault.
“I’m pretty happy, I’m playing solid tennis, I think this is my first singles match on Suzanne Lenglen so thank you for cheering. It’s natural, it’s something I was working on basically since I started. Being focussed and wanting to put pressure on my opponent because from the beginning I have initiative and I can really be on the court and it’s giving me a lot so that’s what I try to do. It’s not easy before every match you really have to be pumped and get in the zone and I am getting better and better at it but I’m still not an expert.
“He gets more ideas than me. Basically, I like to work on everything because I am a perfectionist and I feel like always there is something I can do better. But I don’t know honestly, I don’t want to tell you because maybe my next opponent is watching that so I will keep that (training plans) to myself,” said Swiatek during her on-court interview.
Iga Swiatek to play Danka Kovinic in Round 3
Iga was asked about her short break after her first-round win when she went sightseeing in Versailles and the Pole described her experience as, “That was the most beautiful thing I ever saw in my life. Everything was so symmetrical. I really love maths and everything was symmetrical. When something is off, I am like, ‘Wow, that’s wrong.”
With the win over Riske, Iga will now take on World No. 95 Danka Kovinic who comes into the third round with a straight-set win over Anna Schmiedlova defeating her 6-3, 7-5. It will be the first meeting between the two players. Kovinic had earlier defeated 25th seed Liudmila Samsonova in the first round and will look to carry the form into the clash with Iga which will undoubtedly be the toughest match of the season for her.
