Novak Djokovic started another season with a bang. In the Adelaide International tournament, the Serb overcame his American opponent Sebastian Korda after falling behind him in the first set. The title win in Adelaide further boosts the chances of already overwhelming favorite Djokovic in the Australian Open next in line.
With the win in Adelaide, Djokovic claimed his 92nd career title. The win also meant he is now on a level with his Spanish arch-rival Rafael Nadal on the list of most career titles won. Before going into the season’s first Grand Slam, the 35-year-old candidly spoke about learnings from the last year, putting on muscle mass in the offseason, his phone usage, and an upcoming documentary among other things.
On the questions related to bulking up in the off-season, Djokovic was candid in his reply. “I have lost it already! To be more precise, I lost 1.5kg in Adelaide. It happens. In the off-season, when there are no tournaments, I have the chance to build muscle mass, although in tennis we do not have as much time to do that as in other sports,” 21-time Grand Slam winner said.
“Now the opportunity presented itself and I am glad that the work I put in was fruitful. Playing a tournament always drains you, so I hope I will be able to restore my weight in the next few days,” he further added.
Novak Djokovic’s injury scare right before the Australian Open
Serbian star Novak Djokovic suffered a left hamstring injury in the semi-final against Russian Daniil Medvedev and required a medical time-out, but recovered to win that game, then the final giving relief to the fans. But as the Australian Open is just about to start the issue may come back to affect Djokovic’s chances. He had to cut short his practice session because of the same.
After pulling out from the practice match against Daniil Medvedev in Melbourne, Djokovic gave some updates. “I just felt it pulling and I didn’t want to risk anything worse,” he said. “I played a set and apologized to him and he was understanding. just want to avoid any bigger scares before the Australian Open,” Djokovic further added.
Adelaide’s title extended Djokovic’s winning streak in Australia to 34. The nine-time Australian Open champion’s last defeat on Australian soil came way back in 2018 in the same event. Fans will be hoping that Djokovic will recuperate from the injury scare and reclaim the title at the peak of the Australian summer.
