“I am missing him” Rafael Nadal chooses Roger Federer over Novak Djokovic as his greatest rival
Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer
Rafael Nadal won his third-round match against Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets beating the Italian 6-1, 6-2, 6-4. It was the most clinical performance from Nadal in his three matches at SW19. Nadal is chasing the Calendar Grand Slam at Wimbledon 2022 while Novak Djokovic is looking to defend his title for the third consecutive year. The two are on a collision course as they are expected to meet in what would be a cracker of a match and a great showdown to see which of the two legends comes out on top.
This Wimbledon is different quite different for a number of reasons including the ban of Russian and Belarusian players. It is also the first Wimbledon in more than two decades where Roger Federer, the eight-time Wimbledon champion and the most successful grass-court player is not playing. Nadal and Federer’s rivalry has been one for ages and the two of them have competed in many legendary battles in all grand slams. Federer has been out from the tour since his knee surgery post-Wimbledon 2021.
Rafael Nadal feels Roger Federer is missed at every event, not just Wimbledon.
Though Nadal has a big rivalry with Djokovic, which is actually more pronounced than his rivalry with Roger, Nadal feels that Federer was his greatest rival. In the post-match press conference after Round 3, Nadal said: “Well, it’s a negative thing, But the life, that’s the circle of life, you know. Time happens, and the watch, the clock never stops. This kind of stuff we need to get used to.”
“But in a personal way, of course my personal relationship with Roger have been always great, and probably my greatest rival. At the same time all the things that we shared together on court is something difficult to describe, the emotions, all the things. And of course, I personally miss him in the tennis tour, and tennis of course miss him, tournaments, fans, everyone.”
Nadal concluded that though Wimbledon might be Roger’s biggest stage, he is missed at every event. He said: “I think Roger Federer is important in every single tournament. Not only Wimbledon. He is a well-missed player in every single event of tennis, without a doubt.”
