“I am more optimistic that I will win before he’s allowed,” Novak Djokovic’s coach drops a ‘harsh’ truth bomb over the Serb’s US Open participation

One of the greats of the game, Novak Djokovic, won his maiden major title of the year at Wimbledon a few days ago by beating Nick Kyrgios in the final. This was his 7th Wimbledon title and a 21st major title. The victory was even sweeter after all that Djokovic has gone through this year both on and off the court.

Djokovic was deported from Australia earlier this year and hence wasn’t able to compete at the Australian Open due to his vaccination status. He started the season late and was out of form for the first half of the clay season. He also lost to Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinal of the French Open. But after his Wimbledon triumph, Djokovic is just one major away from Nadal’s record of 22 major titles.

But unfortunately for him, as things stand, the Serb won’t be allowed to compete at the US Open due to his vaccination status. This means that he will have to wait until next year to try and win his 22nd major title. The ruling around vaccination being made mandatory for the US Open has received a lot of backlashes, especially after the decline in Covid cases.

Many eminent personalities have publicly condemned the decision and believe that Djokovic should be allowed to travel to the USA. But Novak Djokovic’s coach, Goran Ivanisevic thinks that the chances of Djokovic competing at the US Open are next to none.

Speaking ahead of the Croatia Open at Umag, Ivanisevic joked that he is more optimistic that he will win in Umag than before Djokovic competed in the USA this year. He also didn’t agree with ATP’s decision to not award ranking points at Wimbledon.

“I am more optimistic that I will win Umag, if Tomislav gives me an invitation. A difficult year, a sad year, started with a disaster in Australia. I also think that the ATP’s decision not to distribute points at Wimbledon is totally crazy and wrong,” the legendary Croatian tennis player said.
