Daniil Medvedev‘s hopes of defending his US Open title have turned to dust after he suffered an agonizing defeat in the round of 16 against Nick Kyrgios. The Aussie defeated Medvedev, 7-6(11),3-6, 6-3, 6-2. The first set was close with both players suffering to keep up with each other’s form. But fans got what they expected from this match – drama.

After the draining first set, Medvedev and Kyrgios took their respective breaks. While Kyrgios took a 5-minute toilet break, Medvedev engaged in a heated argument with the chair-umpire complaining about disturbance coming from Kyrgios’ player’s box. It even came to a point where the Russian threatened to quit the match mid-play. Kyrgios will next face Karen Khachanov in the quarter-final of US Open.

During the match, Kyrgios was constantly yelling at his player’s box saying, “tell me where to f****** serve!” But that wasn’t the only thing disturbing Medvedev. He was distressed by Kyrgios’ team and finally took it up with the umpire. Medvedev said, “They cannot do it. If they do it a second time I am not playing until somebody is out. I have just told you I am not playing if they do it a second time because they cannot do it on my serve.”

Daniil Medvedev further said, “They are in a box of a professional tennis player, they cannot do it on my serve. One more time and I am not playing anymore.”

It is not clear what bothered the World No. 1 but it certainly added a spark to the match. Medvedev wasn’t the only one who fumed at the chair umpire. Kyrgios got a time violation for the shot clock and he immediately approached the umpire. Kyrgios said, “You are the only umpire that I’ve a problem in this matter. I get back from the box and there’s like six seconds. I’ve never had a problem with it at this tournament apart from with you.”
