“I can beat almost everybody on tour,” Holger Rune aims to become the World No.1 after a breakthrough win at the French Open

Holger Rune

19-year-old Holger Rune shocked everyone by pulling off a monumental upset at the 2022 French Open. He stunned one of the favorites to win the title, Stefanos Tsitsipas in four sets 7-5,3-6,6-3,6-4 to reach his maiden grand slam quarterfinal on debut. In his remarkable run at Roland Garros, he has dropped just one set and has beaten some top players.

In the first round itself, he stunned Denis Shapovalov, the man who defeated Rafael Nadal in Rome, in straight sets and then made it to the second week without dropping a single set. He played some extraordinary tennis to start the match against Tsitipas, who was one of the overwhelming favorites to reach the final from the bottom half once again, and made the Greek look like a sitting duck.

After his historic win, in the press conference, Rune claimed that he can beat almost everyone on tour if he plays his best tennis but was wary of the fact that the same thing could happen to him too. “If I play my best tennis I can beat almost everybody on tour, but I have to stay in the moment because if I drop my level everybody can beat me as well in this kind of tournament,” he said.
