“I can start from zero and I’m not afraid of that!” Emma Raducanu hits back at critics and oozes confidence ahead of the vital clash with Serena Williams at Cincinnati
Emma Raducanu
Emma Raducanu has had a very poor season so far. The British teenager stunned the world last year by becoming the first qualifier in tennis history to win a grand slam title. She won the US Open as a qualifier and did it without dropping a single set. But ever since her dream run, Raducanu has massively under performed and hasn’t delivered as promised.
In the many tournaments she has played since winning the US Open, she has managed to reached a quarterfinal stage of a tournament only twice. There has been a lot of pressure on Raducanu and almost every week, she is asked about her poor form. In Cincinnati ahead of her mega clash with Serena Williams, Raducanu was once again asked about her form and the possibility that she will drop a truckload of points if she doesn’t do well in the US Open.
A frustrated Raducanu confidently said that even if she loses 2000 points at the US Open, she will start from the bottom again. She said that she knows she did something that no one ever did and she doesn’t fear to start from the very beginning once again.
“I just lost count how many times I’ve been asked this question,” she said. “If I lose 2,000 points so be it, I’ll start again from the bottom. I know I can do something that no one else has done. I qualified and won the US Open, so I can start from the beginning, I can start from zero and I’m not afraid of that,” Raducanu said.
Emma Raducanu reflects back on her journey
Raducanu further said that she believes whatever is happening with her, is just a part of her journey and it is probably because she came to the biggest of stages without playing at the grassroot level much.
“I just think that everything that’s happening right now has probably just meant to be in my journey and I need to go through those development stages at some point because I did miss them,” Raducanu said. “I went from playing 25ks to winning the US Open.”
In the first round of the Cincinnati Open, Raducanu will face 23-time grand slam champion Serena Williams in a dream match. This will be Serena’s penultimate tournament so the match against Raducanu becomes even more significant.
