Novak Djokovic had an unexpectedly bad match against Rafael Nadal in the Quarter-Finals of the Roland Garros 2022. The Serb was looking in great form in the first four matches of the tournament and even before those matches, he was in great form.

However, in the match against Nadal, he looked out of energy from the beginning of the match and Nadal capitalized on that and swooped that match in his favor when Djokovic was being considered to be the favorite to win the match.

The standards of his performance were extremely low when you think about the things Djokovic has managed to achieve throughout his career. He has been one of the greatest of all time and you expect him to show up with his A-game in an important match.

Even if the match was tough you expect a fight from players like Novak Djokovic who are known to play dominating tennis. The world No.1 is in that position because of his performances and every time he sets foot on a court you expect him to give everything he has to win the match. But that was the thing that went missing in the quarter-final match against Nadal, it felt like the real Djokovic didn’t show up and when he did it was already too late to make a comeback.

Every player in the world has his good days and bad days. If you are a normal player bad days can be ignored and thought of as a learning point. But for legendary players like Novak Djokovic, these bad days come once in a blue moon, and when they do they need to be addressed.

Goran Ivanisevic who is the coach of Novak Djokovic addressed his concern over the world No.1’s performance against Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros. He said, “I have to be brutally honest, to begin with – I’m in a slump and can’t sleep. I can’t say I’m disappointed, but I’m sad.”

“It was not a perfect match on either side. Rafa didn’t play a spectacular game, but the body language decided, from the first point to the last: Rafa’s body language and Novak’s body language. I warned him, that the start of the match could be decisive, but again, a bad start… And then, after the turnaround in the second set, the way he played the third set is incomprehensible.” Goran added.

He ended by saying, “It was as if he lacked energy and as if he did not believe enough that he could win. You can’t afford that against Rafa because it’s his tournament.”
