Iga Swiatek was visibly upset following her defeat to Jessica Pegula in the semifinals which was uncharacteristic of a World No. 1 player. Post-match the Pole provided an honest assessment of her performance and shortcomings. Swatek also acknowledged that Pegula was a better player than her that particular day.

She’s one of the best players in the world so you have to be really on top of your game to win vs. Jessie. It was always like that, even last season,” Swiatek expressed. “So I’m not surprised, because I know what she can do. I’m more surprised I just wasn’t able to step up to her game today,” the Polish star continued.

Swiatek’s first loss of the 2023 season comes right before the Australian Open where she is the biggest favorite to win the tournament. She still has some time to set the affairs straight. The 21-year-old would be taking the loss as a minor setback before bouncing back.
