“I do not know what everybody is digging for” Elena Rybakina’s coach frustrated with constant spotlight on the player’s nationality

Elena Rybakina, the 23-year-old was crowned the 2022 Wimbledon champion as she defeated Ons Jabeur yesterday in a thrilling final which she won by 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Born in Moscow, Rybakina decided to represent Kazakhstan back in 2019 to facilitate more funding, her nationality has always been a topic of interest especially now with the ban on Russian and Belarusian players in 2022 Wimbledon.

Rybakina won her maiden major title yesterday and was commended by players and fans alike from all over the world after she powered through every match on her way to the title, she had to answer a lot of controversial questions every week about her nationality as she was born in Russia but represents Kazakhstan, Rybakina’s country of origin is a hot topic among many.

When asked about how Rybakina maintained her composure amidst all the controversies, the Kazakh’s coach Stefano Vukov said “When she changed nationality from Russian to Kazakh back in 2018, basically the same things happened, similar questions, only from a different side. She is used to this. As I said earlier, we are used to controversial questions, but to be honest, I do not know what everybody is digging for? At the end of the day, these are tennis players, the flag does not matter, we are here to enjoy and to see some great tennis. She handled it well, because she had expected it.

Elena has a long history with the Kazakhstan Tennis Federation, the president of the federation was here today to support her, and the minister of finance as well. They have been great to her and they have helped her very much. I am sure she feels very Kazakh at this moment,” Vukov further elaborated.
