Andy Murray has joined the long list of athletes to put forward their opinion as far as the controversy regarding the FIFA World Cup is concerned. Just a couple of weeks before the start of the 32-team event in Qatar, Borussia Dortmund fans openly voiced their grievance against the staging of the World Cup in the country.

Andy Murray believes that it is not the players’ responsibility to take a stance on the situation. Defending his point, the Briton stated players work all their lives to represent their country on the big stage. He added that FIFA should be held accountable for the entire situation since the players have no authority to decide the venue for the event.

“I don’t think it is necessarily the athletes’ responsibility where their events are,” said Murray. “I am sure for a lot of the players who are going there, they have worked their whole lives to be involved in a WC. I think those questions need to be asked to FIFA and the people organising these major events, whether it is the right thing to do or not. I hope it goes well, but I know there have been a lot of question about whether it is the right place to hold a major event like that,” he added.

Andy Murray is a staunch believer in human rights, as revealed by his agent, Matt Gentry. His agent had earlier stated that the three-time major champion has boycotted events in Saudi Arabia, and does not see the Briton playing in the country anytime soon.

“He’s turned down stuff in Saudi; I don’t think he will play there just because of what’s gone on. They have done a few exhibition matches where they have paid eye-watering sums of money to get players over there and he just wasn’t interested,” Gentry said.

Speaking about his on-court results, Andy Murray was handed a first-round defeat by Gilles Simon at the Paris Masters. The Briton has had a pretty ordinary hard-court season, with his best result being a quarterfinal appearance at Gijon Open. Andy Murray certainly did not have an eventful 2022 season, where he managed to reach just two finals. The Briton’s best results came during the grass court season, particularly at the Stuttgart Open.
