“I don’t want to pick up a racket again” Elina Svitolina gives heartbreaking news as she continues her efforts to help Ukraine
Elina Svitolina
Former World No. 3 and Bronze medallist at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, Elina Svitolina has been one of the most vocal Ukrainian athletes who has been actively involved in bringing global attention to the war in Ukraine that has been going on for more than 3 months and has wreaked havoc in the country due to continuous attacks by the Russian forces.
While there have been sanctions put on Russia globally, the destruction in Ukraine cannot be restored by those sanctions and Svitolina, with help of many others, is working in towards rebuilding their country while continuing their protests against the Russians. In these circumstances, Svitolina has not played tennis since early March and as per her recent statements, that could have probably been the last time she played as well.
“All efforts are directed to help Ukraine”: Elina Svitolina
Svitolina was recently named ambassador of the United 24 platform, becoming the second athlete after Andriy Shevchenko to be named as an ambassador. The organisation aims at restoring the country by conducting events and bringing in donations from the events. While Shevchenko retired from Professional football a while ago, Svitolina has given up on the sport making her country the first priority.
“Now all my efforts are directed to a charitable foundation and how I can help Ukraine. I don’t want to pick up a racket again. As soon as the war began, it was very difficult for me to court and perform, seeing what all Ukrainians and those people who defend our country go through. Therefore, this is now a great motivation to help and try to do something for Ukraine, which has given me a lot.
“Thanks to the United24 platform, we will try to raise funds to help Ukraine. This is the biggest task for Andriy Shevchenko and me at the moment, to do everything possible so that the world does not forget about the war so that there is as much attention as possible to Ukraine so that people do not forget about us and understand that we need help more than ever. To raise funds, we have planned 5-6 events before the end of the year. These are charity matches, auctions and various meetings with sponsors,” said Svitolina as per BTU.
“We are in a state where we need help”: Elina Svitolina on the globe losing interest in the War
While the war in Ukraine remained a hot topic of discussion for a long time after the war began, over the past couple of weeks, people have shifted their interests to other topics, much to the disappointment of the Ukrainians who are asking for all possible help to show how the country has been ruined due to the War.
“With such events, as, for example, Andriy Shevchenko held yesterday, we remind you that we still have a war going on, we are in a state where we need help. With such events, which are also planned on my part, we will try to show what is happening and how these people can help us. After the funds are raised, we will see which of the United24 destinations will be the hottest at that time. It will all depend on the state of Ukraine now and what will be most needed.
“We will focus on this in order to acquire exactly what is needed at the moment. If I could choose, then such areas as medicine and helping children are personally important to me. This is one of the big goals for me. But I understand that Ukraine we need help in all areas. When we win, help to restore infrastructure will be very important. At the moment, I will focus more on medicine, although I want to help in all areas that United24 works in,” added Svitolina.
