“I felt like I was going to pass out” Taylor Fritz explains his mid-match withdrawal against Dan Evans in Citi Open

Taylor Fritz in Citi Open 2022
Taylor Fritz is an American tennis player, who is known for his calm behaviour on and off the court and is considered a future star in American as well as World tennis. Fritz started his career by winning the Junior Grand slam and finished as a runner-up in another. He is also considered one of the most talented players on the ATP tour. Currently ranked no.1 American tennis player, the world no.13 has won a total number of 3 career titles ever since he turned into a pro.
The 24-year-old was playing great in the Citi Open where he got to the round of 16 after a dominant performance over Alexie Popyrin in his round of 32 matches. The American, in his ro16 match, faced Dan Evans of Britain where he got off to a good start, winning the first set by 6-3 but couldn’t carry on his winning momentum to the second set and lost the second set after fighting till the tiebreaker. Tired and full of fatigue, Fritz gave a walkover to the Briton after retiring in just 5 games in the third set with a score of 1-4 games in favour of Evans.
Taylor Fritz: Many don’t know this but I have been in a boot since Wimbledon

After he was forced to retire mid-match, everyone got suspicious over Fritz pulling out without any injury. Taylor himself shared the reason why did he give the walkover without even finishing the match through his Twitter account where the latter blamed the hot/humid conditions. He said, “First off, health-wise I’m okay. I feel embarrassed not being able to finish a match. I’ve never pulled out of a match in my life but after my episode in Toronto last year where pushed myself to finish the match and almost passed out.
“I assured my team I would pull out if similar symptoms happened again. Typically, I pride myself on my fitness and ability to compete in very hot/ humid, brutal conditions like today. Many don’t know this but I have been in a boot since Wimbledon and although I have been doing heavy fitness while in the boot, no amount of assault bike in the gym can prepare you for playing a long match in these type of conditions,” added Fritz.
“I started to practice on court again this Saturday so playing here in DC was definitely ambitious but I’m really happy with my actual level of tennis and I’m really happy that my foot is feeling good. Today I constantly felt like I was going to pass out, my vision was going fuzzy, and the only thing that can really prepare me for playing in these conditions… is playing in these conditions.
“Something I just haven’t been able to do while nursing my foot. Now that my foot feels better I can finally put in the on court work and be prepared for the rest of the year. Sorry if I worried anyone,” concluded Fritz.
