As Emma Raducanu prepares for her title defence at the 2022 US Open, former World No. 1 Martina Navratilova has also shed light on the British teenager’s form and struggles this season where she has lost more matches than she has won, reaching the Flushing Meadows with a 12-15 record making fans doubt whether she can make a good run at the major, let alone defend the title.

While Emma can certainly be cut some slack as this is her first full season on the Tour and she is getting used to the rigorous life, a lot of off-court activities have also seemed to impact the teenager’s first season. Raducanu has been struggling with injuries a lot this season along with the chop-and-change policy when it comes to her head coach with the Brit already having undergone coaching stints with more than 3 different coaches.

With Raducanu currently working with Russian coach Dmitry Tursunov, with the arrangement believed to be a temporary one as the Russian was not working with her during the Canadian Open, Navratilova praised Emma for bringing the Russian in her camp as he recently led Anett Kontaveit to World No. 2 and also helped the Estonian make her debut and finish runner-up at the 2021 WTA Finals.

“This is a good coaching situation for her. I hope she sticks with it. If I had that many coaches in a year, I would be struggling, too. Too many points of view, too many philosophies — too much information. When you get information from one coach you can kind of sift through that, figure it out. But when you’re getting it from so many different people, how are you supposed to process all that?” said Navratilova speaking with WTA.

While the draw for Raducanu on her way to the title is certainly tricky as her form has not been great lately, the talent she possesses can certainly make it interesting to see how far does she go. Raducanu’s defence of 2040 points begins against French veteran Alize Cornet on Day-2 of the major.
