With both the youngsters in the finals, a brilliant match was expected and the duo did not disappoint over the course of the 2-hour and 25-minute match. Sinner takes a 2-1 lead over Alcaraz in the head-to-head having earlier defeated the Spanish teenager in the 4th round of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships as well. Sinner was clinical in the match, saving all of his 9 break points while breaking Alcaraz 4 times from the 9 break opportunities he had while also firing 6 aces and conceding only 2 in a winning performance.

Sinner had made it to 6 quarter-finals this year including the 2022 Australian Open and the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. He however lost in all 6 quarter-final clashes and despite the consistency, was trophyless. He changed the stat this week in Umag and solidified his position in the Top-10 as he looks to move up the ladder in the rankings.

“I am obviously very happy. I have [had] a tough year until now, I had some unfortunate moments, but we worked every time to play better, to be a better player, to be a better person. So, I’m very happy to be finally lifting a trophy this year, but I know that I still have a lot of things to improve… It’s all about the process.

“That was a crucial point [holding the serve in the second game of the second set]. I knew I had to stay there. He made some unforced errors, and I was very happy that I won this game. Then I returned well and raised my level a little bit, and I think I found a solution then,” said Sinner after clinching the title in Umag.

Sinner will take a week’s rest and will let go of his maiden ATP-500 title that he won in Washington last year without any title defence before returning to the Tour in the 2022 Canadian Masters, a route that even Alcaraz will follow as he has not signed up for any of the first week events in August.
