“I want to be the player with most grand slams in history”: Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal has now solidified his place in history book when the chapter of ‘Greatest of all time’ will be written in tennis. He won his 22nd major title on the Parisian clay after beating Casper Ruud in the final of the 2022 French Open. He got the better of Ruud in straight sets 6-3,6-3,6-0 to win a record 14th Roland Garros title.

Nadal is now two majors ahead of his arch-rivals and the other Big 3 members, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. And with the form and rhythm, he is currently in, it looks likely that he will add a few more to his tally. But Nadal, as he has been for years, was once again humble in victory.

Talking to CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, Nadal said that he considers himself a very normal guy and said that if he can achieve 22, anybody else can do it too. But he added that yes, 22 majors can be achieved but admitted that winning 14 Roland Garros titles is something very difficult.

“I always consider myself a very normal guy, so if I did it, maybe somebody else can do it,” Nadal said. “It’s obvious the record of 22 grand slams is something much more possible that somebody can increase that record. I am sure that’s going to happen; 14 Roland Garros is something … very difficult.”

In the same interview, Nadal further said that he wants to end up with the player with the most major titles, i.e. ahead of Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer because that is his competitive side, but also added that it is not something that he is obsessed with. He went on to say that it doesn’t bother him to think that Novak wins 23 majors while he stays at 22. He concluded by saying that his happiness won’t change despite any result.

“Of course, I want to be the player with (most) grand slams in history — that’s competition,” Nadal said. “But it’s not something that I am obsessed (with) and it’s not something that changed my mind … Honestly, it’s something that does not bother me if Novak wins 23 and I stay with 22. I think my happiness will not change at all, not even one percent.”
