Daniil Medvedev had a night to forget at the 2022 ATP Finals as he was dumped out of the 2022 ATP Finals. The Russian was up against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round-robin match. Both players had lost their first match and needed a win to stay in contention for a semi-final spot.

Tsitsipas came out on the top after a clutch performance in the final set tiebreaker. The Greek won the match 6-3, 6-7(11), 7-6(1) despite being 3-5 down in the third set. Medvedev served for the match at 5-4 but Tsitsipas broke him to even out things before dismantling him in the tiebreaker.

Medvedev is known for his big serves and the conditions were favoring the ones with better serves. Despite this, Medvedev could not win the match and was understandably upset with his own performance.

“Terrible to not serve it out, especially on such a fast court. It means I was not good enough, and I have to be better. Mentally, I don’t care. I don’t care if I play a top-10 or not. But tennis-wise it’s tougher to play a top-10 player. That means I have to play better tennis against these guys. That’s what I’m going to try to do next time because there is no other choice.

“I didn’t really feel much nerves. I just had to play better, and serve better. I don’t know what to say else. I had to win the match, but I didn’t. So I have to do better next time. There is no other choice,” said Medvedev speaking with the press after his defeat to Tsitsipas.

Medvedev qualified for the ATP Finals for the first time in 2019. He was joined by Rafael Nadal, Alexander Zverev, and Tsitsipas in the group where he ended up losing all of his matches. Having finished as the runner-up at the 2019 US Open, all eyes were on Medvedev but the Russian couldn’t deliver.

In the next two editions, Medvedev improved emphatically reaching back-to-back finals. He defeated Dominic Thiem in the finals of the 2020 ATP Finals to win the title. Looking to make a title defense in 2021 against Zverev as both men came looking for their second ATP Finals title, it was the German who emerged on the top.

In his final group stage match this year, Medvedev will go up against Novak Djokovic who has already qualified for the semi-finals and is confirmed as the group topper. It will be a dead rubber as the result won’t have any consequence on the qualification scenario for the semis.
