World No. 40 Nick Kyrgios‘ first Grand Slam finals appearance ends in a defeat as 3-time defending champion Novak Djokovic wins the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, recording his fourth consecutive title at the Grand Slam and his 7th overall at the historic venue. The win also takes Novak ahead of Roger Federer‘s tally of 20 majors and he is now 1 behind Rafael Nadal‘s tally of 22 major titles.

Kyrgios started the match winning the first set and drawing the first blood in the match. Djokovic however remained calm and composed in the next sets as Kyrgios got into altercations with the crowd and the chair umpire over the disturbance from some section of fans. Djokovic eventually won the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(3) in 3 hours and 1 minute to hand Kyrgios a loss in his first-ever Grand Slam finals.

It was meant to be Djokovic’s day as he had answers to all questions Nick was putting forth and the Australian could not match the level the Serb was operating on. While another version of Nick would have been salty about it, Kyrgios today was gracious in defeat and with utmost respect praised his new friend on the Tour.

“He’s a bit of a god. I am not going to lie I thought I played well. First of all I would like to congratulate Novak and his team, he has won the Championships I don’t know how many times anymore. Honestly, to all the ball kids and umpires, you and I have a very tough relationship at times but thank you for putting up with it. The crowd, it’s been an amazing couple of weeks personally.

“Absolutely not (hungry for more Grand Slam finals). I am so tired. Myself, my team, we are all so exhausted, we have played so much tennis. We all need to get a good vacation after this one. I am really happy with the result, the best of my career and hopefully maybe one day I will be here again but I don’t know about that,” said Kyrgios in his on-court interview.
