The ‘King of Clay’ Rafael Nadal is through to his 14th Roland Garros final after beating Alexander Zverev in the semifinals. Zverev was forced to retire in the second set after he twisted his ankle during one of the rallies. Nadal eventually won the match 7-6(8),6-6, and advanced to his 30th major final where he’ll face Casper Ruud, a Rafa Nadal Academy prodigy.

Before the French Open, a lot was talked about Rafa’s foot injury. His foot condition kicked in at the Rome Masters where he lost in the Round of 16 because of the injury. He didn’t arrive in Paris at 100% fitness due to his foot condition but managed to reach the final without worsening it.

Ahead of the final, Rafa mentioned that he is still not confident about his foot and his stand stays the same as it was in Rome. He was then hypothetically asked whether he’d lose the final if he was to get a new foot in return.

Rafa was positive about it and said that without a doubt, he’d prefer to lose the final and his opinion won’t change. He argued that a new foot would allow him to be happier in his daily life.

He added that of course winning is nice and gives him an adrenaline rush but in the end, it’s temporary and he has to go on living because he has a life ahead of him. His happiness will always be ahead of any title.

“Winning is very nice and gives you an adrenaline rush, but it’s temporary and then you have to go on living. I have a life ahead of me and in the future, I would love to play sports with my friends. My happiness goes ahead of any title,” he said.
