Leylah Fernandez

World No. 18 Leylah Fernandez has once again played brilliantly in a Grand Slam event as she advances into the quarter-finals of the 2022 French Open. The Canadian who played the finals of the 2021 US Open, did not enjoy much success on the Tour this season as she lost in the first round of 2022 Australian Open and apart from her successful title defence at the 2022 Monterrey Open, she was unable to register three consecutive match wins till the French Open.

In Paris however, she has come out all guns blazing and on the back of some gritty performances combined with her brilliance, she is into the last-8 of the Grand Slam having defeated Doubles great Katerina Siniakova, Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Belinda Bencic and former French Open semi-finalist Amanda Anisimova.

During her press conference in the French Open, the southpaw from Canada talked about her biggest strength which is not known to many and in a way is a secret weapon of hers that can see her play even if her left arm is injured.

“I was born ambidextrous. Playing tennis, I was more comfortable with my left hand than my right hand. However, I do know that, like I always told my dad that if I injure my left arm I was going to play with my right arm, no problem. So like some funny moments like that. Who decided you’re going to be a lefty? It was my call. My dad says it’s actually a good idea because it wasn’t because he thought of it as an advantage,” said Leylah.

With the fourth round win over Anisimova, Fernandez will now take on surprise quarter-finalist Martina Trevisan who is currently ranked 59th in the world. The 28-year old Italian will face the 19-year old Leylah for the first time with the match marking the first time Martina would have reached a Grand Slam quarter-final as her previous best Grand Slam finishes were the second-round runs she made in the 2022 Australian Open and the 2021 US Open.
