“If it was tennis vs tennis, he would win every time,” Mark Philippoussis opines on the controversial ‘Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Nick Kyrgios’ match and backs the Greek to win on merit
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Nick Kyrgios
In the third round at Wimbledon 2022, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Nick Kyrgios played one of the most controversial and drama-filled matches of the tournament on Court No.1. The match, which was already of very high standards, was made even more exciting by the drama that unfolded. Kyrgios, who is already one of the most controversial figures in tennis, started his bickering and ranting after losing the first set.
He hurled abuses at the umpire, at the fans, and wasn’t taking a back seat in terms of verbal abuse. He received warnings that many believed should’ve been point penalties or a better punishment. After losing the second set, Tsitsipas also smashed a ball in the crowd which unintentionally hit a spectator. According to the rules, he should’ve been defaulted and Kyrgios demanded the same, but the umpire refused.
Kyrgios was very furious about the ruling and demanded multiple supervisors and even refused to play at a point. In the end, Tsitsipas was in the back seat and received a point penalty before Kyrgios got it. Former Australian tennis player, Mark Philippoussis, who has a Greek background, spoke about the controversial match recently and backed Tsitsipas to win it if it was purely tennis vs tennis.
He said that the Greek has to find a way to manage it and focus on himself because such a thing will happen again and Kyrgios needs a distraction because it helps him.
“He has to find a way to manage it and focus on himself because it will happen again. He will expect it to happen again, because if it was tennis vs tennis, Tsitsipas would win every time. That’s why Kyrgios needs the distraction, it helps him,” he said.

‘He’s going to have to find a way to stay focused on himself’: Mark Philippoussis on Stefanos Tsitsipas
Philippoussis added that despite being mentally very strong, Tsitsipas lost his temper and will learn a lot from the game. He said that he will have to stay focused in these kind of games and let his tennis do the talking.
“Stefanos is mentally strong, he just lost his temper. He will learn a lot from this game and it will be a blessing for him in the future. He’s going to have to find a way to stay focused on himself because he’s going to play important matches against Nick in the future. He will have to find a way and I don’t think something like that would happen again. Despite the constant tiff between them, he had opportunities in the fourth set and if he would have won, he probably win’s the fifth too,” he said.
