Patrick Mouratoglou is a French Tennis coach and sports commentator of a greek descendant. He coached Serena Williams from 2012 to 2022. Currently, he’s coaching Simon Halep. He also works with Monte Carlo champion Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Mouratoglu said if Rafael Nadal arrives at Roland Garros having fewer matches than usual that can affect his performance. “If Nadal arrives at Roland‐Garros having fewer matches than usual, that can play a role, yes,” he said.
He stated a fact that Nadal had been playing a lot of matches in the lead-up to the event. If this time Nadal does play fewer matches then his favorite major won’t be smooth as before.
Mouratoglu said that Roland -Garros is going to be tough for Nadal. Nadal has a lot of confidence from the start of the season but everyone knows he likes to play a lot of matches before Roland Garros to feel in control. “I think it’s going to be tough for Rafael Nadal [at Roland Garros this year]. Thankfully, he has a lot of confidence from the start of the season but we know how much he loves to play a lot of matches before Roland Garros to feel fully in control,” Mouratoglou said.
Mouratoglu from a coach’s point of view said that if Nadal doesn’t feel the control it will be difficult for him. If he cannot play tournaments it is going to be a big hurdle for the Spanish. But there is no option for Nadal because he has to play well straight away. Mouratoglu also stated that Nadal doesn’t play well at the start of the season and this time it won’t be an option for him.
“If he doesn’t feel the control, it will be difficult for him. If he cannot play more tournaments, it’s going to be a big hurdle for him. He has no other option but to play well straight away,” Mouratoglou said. “A lot of the time, he doesn’t play well at the start of the season at all. He won’t have that option that year.”
Rafael Nadal’s injury status
The Spaniard has won 21 grand slams. However recently he suffered a rib injury in the semi-finals of the BNP Paribas Open against Carlos Alcaraz. He still played the final against Taylor Fritz and lost straight sets ending his unbeaten start to the 2022 season.
