Day-9 of the 2024 Indian Wells Open marked a successful experiment for the tournament organizers. The objective to play out all the singles quarter-finals for both women and men on the same day was a big hit. On an action-packed day, the big names continued their runs ahead.

Defending champ Carlos Alcaraz registered his 10th consecutive win in Indian Wells as he reached the semis. Women’s World No. 1 Iga Swiatek also progressed into the semis. Both the remaining top seeds are now into their third consecutive Indian Wells semis.

American icon Coco Gauff also made her way to the semis in Indian Wells for the first time. Last year’s runner-up Daniil Medvedev continues his pursuit of his maiden title in tennis paradise after a sensational win. Elsewhere, reigning Australian Open winner Jannik Sinner reaches back-to-back semis with another straight-set win.

2024 Indian Wells Day 9 Highlights

Jannik Sinner notches up his 19th consecutive win

Sinner continued his fine form as he overpowered Jiri Lehecka in their duel. With the straight-set win, the Italian reaches back-to-back semis at the Masters’ event. He is yet to drop a set at the tournament this year.

The win over Lehecka becomes the World No. 3’s 16th consecutive win of the season. He is 19-0 since the start of the 2023 Davis Cup in November. In doing so, he became the youngest in Open Era to make a 16-0 start to a season.

An anti-climatic end sees Iga Swiatek reach the semis for third consecutive year

In a battle of former champs, it is Swiatek who continues her run ahead. Playing against 2011 winner Caroline Wozniacki, the Pole had clinched the first set. With the second set having just started, the Dane was forced to forfeit due to a toe injury.

As a result, Swiatek reaches her third consecutive semi-final at Indian Wells. Having won the title in 2022, she was defeated by eventual winner Elena Rybakina in the semis last year. But with a title shot once again, the seven-time WTA-1000 title winner would be eyeing her eighth win for this week.

Carlos Alcaraz fends off his bee fear and Alexander Zverev

Defending champ Alcaraz makes it to the semis after a convincing win over Alexander Zverev. The match lasted 1 hour and 29 minutes, although the players spent quite a lot of time at the stadium. With a sudden bee attack on the court, the play was suspended for 1 hour and 48 minutes.

The win over Zverev takes Alcaraz to his third straight semis in the tennis paradise. With all his ranking points at stake, he has been performing exceptionally well so far. With just one set dropped, he has looked sensational and might just match Novak Djokovic‘s decade-old record this week.

Daniil Medvedev teaches sportsmanship to Holger Rune on his way to the semis

Last year’s runner-up Medvedev has yet again reached the last-4 in the Californian desert. Up against the Danish young gun Holger Rune, the Russian won the tie in straight-sets. After a heated incident on the first point of the second set, Medvedev proved his tag of being a self-proclaimed ‘hardcourt specialist’.

Only the Indian Wells title is missing from Medvedev’s trophy cabinet that otherwise includes all the hardcourt Masters titles. Having made the finals last year, the former US Open winner will look to end the drought and complete the cabinet for all big titles on American soil.

American challenge for both men’s and women’s title lives on

While young gun Emma Navarro was knocked out by Maria Sakkari, who came from a set down, the American challenge is still alive. Women’s World No. 3 Gauff breezed past Yue Yuan in straight sets to reach her maiden semis at the Indian Wells.

The same was the story for Tommy Paul, but he had to dig deeper than Gauff. He defeated former World No. 2 Casper Ruud in three sets to reach the last-4 for the first time. With one player each in both draws, there’s a lot to cheer for the home crowd to see the trophy remain within their country.
