Iga Swiatek breaks Maria Sharapova’s 15-year-old ‘noble’ record with her US Open title triumph

Iga Swiatek just keeps making her 2022 season better. She wins her third major title by beating Ons Jabeur in the final of the 2022 US Open. The Pole defeated Jabeur in straight sets 6-2,7-6(5) to win her maiden US Open title which is also her first major title on a surface other than clay.

This was Swiatek’s 7th title of the season and she also became the first woman after Serena Williams in 2013 to win both the French Open and the US Open in the same calendar year. She also became the first player to win multiple Grand Slam Women’s singles titles since Angelique Kerber in 2016.

Swiatek, who was already the World No.1 ahead of the US Open, now has extended her lead at the top. For the first time in her career, Swiatek has more than 10000 ranking points and leads the No.2, Ons Jabeur by more than double points. The Pole has 10365 points to her name while Jabeur has 5090 points to her name. Swiatek also has more points than that of No.2 and No.3 combined.

Swiatek, who won her first major title in 2020 as a teenager, now has 3 grand slam titles to her name and along with Ash Barty and Naomi Osaka is the only female player with multiple major titles since 2020.

Swiatek has broken one more record after winning the US Open- at 21 years old, she becomes the youngest female player to win 3 major titles since Maria Sharapova. The Russian won 3 major titles at the age of 20 after her triumph at the 2008 Australian Open.
