Iga Swiatek careful to not make Naomi Osaka and Bianca Andreescu’s mistakes as consistency made primary goal

Iga Swiatek is looking to be consistent on the WTA tour unlike Bianca Andreescu and Naomi Osaka

The World was on Iga Swiatek‘s feet in 2022. She won two Grand Slam titles and six WTA titles. She also managed to remain at the top of the leaderboard for more than 40 weeks. Only a few ladies have been able to achieve this feat in the history of the sport.

Iga Swiatek also won 37 matches on the trot in 2022 which is the longest in the WTA tour history in the 21st century. However, Iga Swiatek is not satisfied with all her previous season’s achievements and consider it no big deal. Other players including Bianca Andreescu and Naomi Osaka had a long winning streak in the past.

“I don’t really know how to kind of, how to judge that (on the change in consistency at the top of the womens’ game), because on the other hand there were also really consistent players like three, four years ago, like Naomi or Bianca Andreescu. But we will see what’s gonna happen in the future,” she said in a recent interview.

After a tough loss in the last two tournaments against Jessica Pegula at the United Cup 2023 and Elena Rybakina at the Australian Open 2023, the Polish player is trying to find her form back. She is prioritizing on consistent brilliant performances which may help her to gain her rhythm.

“For sure my goal is to be consistent, and it was since the beginning. I wish I could kind of — like from 2021 I just wanted to be consistent but on a higher level, like be in semifinals, finals. For sure last season kind of showed that I can do that. But right now I want to kind of come back to the balance and also know that I’m not gonna win every tournament,” she continued.

The Polish player is having a tough season. She lost to Jessica Pegula of the USA in the semi-final of the United Cup 2023. This was the first time the American was able to defeat Iga Swiatek in her career. She was also knocked out by the eventual finalist Elena Rybakina in the fourth round of the Australian Open 2023.

“Exactly what I needed was to reset it a little bit, and I knew what I did wrong at the Australian Open and over my whole stay in Australia,”  Iga Swiatek said.

“I really wanted to focus on getting my expectations lower and not expect from myself that I’m gonna, you know, play perfectly all the time. Because, yeah, last season was so strange, actually, that it can actually mess up with your head a little bit,”  the World No.1 explained.

Hence, she revealed that she would like to focus more on the technical aspects of her game now and would like to improve upon it.

“I really wanted to get both my feet on the ground, just focus on hard work and what I have to do on the court, I was really happy because we did. I would say even in the last part of the preseason, our practices were really intense and like, the volume was also pretty big. So I feel like I could really focus on the technical stuff and just improve as a player,”  she elaborated.

Iga Swiatek is in Doha to participate in the Qatar Ladies Open. She reached the semi-final round of this competition here, and her next opponent here will be Veronika Kudermetova.
