Iga Swiatek credits Rohan Bopanna for valuable lessons that helped her beat Caroline Garcia, the Indian’s teammate
Iga Swiatek and Rohan Bopanna
Iga Swiatek after a wonderful season came to Dubai to play in the exhibition event, World Tennis League. She is in Team Kites which also includes 2022 Davis Cup winner Felix Auger-Aliassime, 2022 Paris Masters winner Holger Rune and Eugenie Bouchard. This is the first edition of this tournament which will be played between the 19th and 24th of December.
The World No.1’s Team Kites were pitted against Team Eagles. Iga Swiatek beat Team Eagles’ Caroline Garcia which was another meeting between the two. The two ladies last met in the Group stage of the WTA Finals 2022 in Fort Worth, Texas, USA. In that match, the Polish star defeated Caroline Garcia. In this match too, Iga Swiatek beat the French 6-3, 6-4.
In her latest interview during the tournament, Iga Swiatek gave reasons for accepting to participate in this event.
“Truth be told I wasn’t counting games. I’m pretty happy I’m able to play here and also focus on some other stuff than usual during matches because I can change something up in my tactics or work on something else or just implement the stuff I’ve been working on during preseason,” she said.
Iga Swiatek is looking to dominate the 2023 season
For the 2022 French Open champion, a win or loss in this event does not matter. She is in Dubai to learn from the players the intricacies of the sport. She thinks that it will help her to become better as a player and help her during the season.
“The score isn’t the most important thing here, mostly it’s fun and learning. So I’m happy I played a solid game. There is always something to improve,” she added further.
Iga Swiatek is also trying her newly acquired skills and techniques on the court. She told how the Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna helped her to better her volley game. She used it to score against Caroline Garcia in the match.
“I’m 21 so I feel like I can actually do many things. But on volleys, for sure we’ve been working on just my volley game. Rohan (Bopanna) there (from Team Eagles) taught me volleys right before the tournament, so it’s actually his fault I made that volley on game point (against Garcia). I’m pretty happy I can use experience of such amazing players and learn a lot,” she continued.
The 2022 US Open champion will love to play the 2023 season on the same terms as she accomplished in the 2022 season. Constant improvement and practice is the key and she knows that very well.
