Iga Swiatek stormed into the fourth round of the Italian Open, after registering a comfortable victory over Lesia Tsurenko. The defending champion dropped just two games in the match, which includes a bagel in the second set. Speaking after her victory on Sunday, the three-time Grand Slam champion was disappointed with the turnaround in the stands at the Italian Open.

During the past week, fans have criticized the tournament organizers for the poor scheduling in Rome. Moreover, the ticket prices have become unaffordable for many fans, with the night session matches requiring a new bunch of tickets. Iga Swiatek raised her opinion on the subject, encouraging more spectators to turn up for the matches.

The 2023 Italian Open has seen empty stands during the night session matches. Witnessing such a sparse crowd on a Sunday afternoon speaks volumes about the high ticket prices at the ongoing tournament in Rome. These are still early days in the tournament, however, going by historical standards, the Italian Open has always been filled with spectators in the stands.

Speaking shortly after her dominant third-round victory, Iga Swiatek gave her two cents on the low attendance at the ongoing Italian Open. “I just really appreciate you guys coming. I know we can do better and fill out the whole stadium, but I’m pretty happy you’re here and supporting tennis..,” she said.

Iga Swiatek remains the player to beat at the Italian Open, given that Aryna Sabalenka has already been knocked out of the tournament. The world number one has already claimed the 2023 Stuttgart Open title last month. She was defeated in the finals of the Madrid Open a couple of weeks, as Aryna Sabalenka captured her 13th WTA title.

Iga Swiatek has claimed back-to-back titles in Rome and is well on course to complete a hattrick this year. The two-time French Open champion humbled Karolina Pliskova in the finals in 2021, whereas, she defeated Ons Jabeur in the finale last year. The 21-year-old will certainly have an eye on a third French Open title, which is scheduled to begin in a couple of weeks’ time.
