Iga Swiatek discusses her goals and New Year resolutions for the 2023 season
Polish star talks about what she is aiming for in the upcoming season.
World Number 1 Iga Swiatek
World Number 1 Iga Swiatek is coming off an incredible 2022 season where she took home the French Open and US Open titles and held onto her rank since first gaining the top spot in April. The 21-year-old Pole, however, is not setting herself any strict goals, saying they will crystallize as the tournaments come closer. She intends to set her objectives with the rest of the world on New Year’s Eve.
Swiatek has had a dominant year and says it feels weird as she has never been in such a situation before. She believes she will have to make some changes and expects to approach the new season differently. However, she believes that continuing on her current path would still be the plan.
The star believes in the living game to game and will be taking each tournament as it comes to avoid being strayed from the path of consistency. With an unbelievable 21-2 win-loss record in Grand Slams this year, the philosophy seems to be paying off for Swiatek. Great concentration and resilience have been tenets of her game. She has won 10 matches from a set down this year, up from 7 in the 2021 and 2020 seasons combined.
Iga Swiatek is already at 15th on the WTA all-time list for weeks at Number 1. She has also posted a 135-day 37-match win streak, the joint longest winning streak on the WTA tour. Continuing on her current trajectory is the right thing to aim for as her competitors improve and strive to claim the top spot in the rankings for themselves.
The recently concluded World Tennis League held in Dubai was an indicator of the challenge Swiatek faces. She was surprisingly defeated by World Number 21 Elena Rybakina in straight sets at the exhibition tournament as Team Kites lost to Team Hawks in the finals. The two players went neck and neck in many games, with the Swiatek missing multiple breakpoints.

Iga Swiatek misses out on World Tennis League victory
The curtains closed on the debut season of the World Tennis League, a new exhibition mixed-gender team tennis tournament. The Hawks defeated the Kites in a captivating final. The Kites consisted of a mix of experience and youth, with Iga Swiatek, Sania Mirza, Felix Auger-Aliassame, Holger Rune, and Eugenie Bouchard playing on the same side of the net.
Iga Swiatek lost to Elena Rybakina as the Hawks rallied to a 32-25 team victory. This was Swiatek’s first loss in the 4-day exhibition, having previously defeated Caroline Garcia and Aryna Sabalenka. The match would fall on Christmas Eve, which left time for some fun. Swiatek was all smiles as she donned a Santa Clause hat post-game to cheer on her teammates.
Swiatek’s next match is at Brisbane, where she will represent Team Poland in the United Cup. Swiatek will then bid to win her first Australian Open, where she is the top seed defending 780 points.
