Iga Swiatek beat Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals of the 2023 WTA Finals to get one step closer to winning the tournament and becoming the year-end world No.1. The Polish needed two things to become the year-end World No. 1 – firstly, Sabalenka should not have won more than two matches in her group stages and she should not have qualified for the finals. Now that all those criteria have been met, Swiatek can realize her dream by just beating Jessica Pegula in the final.

The match between Swiatek and Sabalenka was one of the most highly anticipated matches of the 2023 WTA Finals. This big win will definitely give Iga a major boost ahead of the final.

Thank you guys for coming. Thank you for cheering. I really appreciate it. You give us energy to play from December to November. I’m really grateful. I’ll see you tomorrow

Iga Swiatek won the match 6-3, 6-2 in straight sets and did not face any hindrance at all. The Polish has had a perfect record in the tournament so far and has won all her matches. She has defeated Coco Gauff, Marketa Vondrousova, and Ons Jabeur so far and is just one victory away from winning the title.

However, the Pole will have a difficult job to accomplish in the final as her opponent, Jessica Pegula, also has a perfect record in the tournament so far. She also defeated Sabalenka in the group stage and reached the final after toying with her doubles partner Coco Gauff in the semifinals of the tournament. Pegula beat the US Open champion 6-2, 6-1. Thus, fans can expect to see a thrilling final.

Iga Swiatek talks about facing Jessica Pegula in the final

Swiatek is aware of the fact that her match against Jessica Pegula in the final is going to be anything but easy. The Pole said that the American deserves to be in the final but that she is just going to focus on herself ahead of the final.

Jessie’s a great player. She fully deserves to be in the final of any tournament. I know it won’t be easy. We had a nice battle in Montreal. There’s a lot to think about. I’m just gonna focus on myself tomorrow. She’s really solid & can handle everything mentally. I’ll try to do my best & give 100%. That’s all I can do

Swiatek is 5-3 up against Pegula in head-to-head matches but the American has won their most recent faceoff. Moreover, Swiatek and Pegula have a 10-match and 9-match winning streak, respectively.
