Top-seeded Iga Swiatek has faced a huge setback in the round of 16 matchups at the ongoing US Open. She has blown her chance to pounce on a second Grand Slam title at the last slam of the year, losing against Jelena Ostapenko despite winning the first set. Swiatek was hugely devastated by failing to capitalize on her chances and finally lost the match by a scoreline of 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
At the post-match press conference, she talked about how consistent she has been all season and further focused on the crucial matches she has lost. She used a cuss word while accepting her slump of form during the crucial matches. It’s true that Swiatek has been quite consistent in terms of starts in every single tournament but she has fumbled in the later stages of the tournaments thereby failing to convert them into titles.
Swiatek said at the press conference, “No, I think overall, my history this season, I made a very good job you know just staying at a constant level maybe except you know some matches that I shouldn’t f*** up.” Swiatek had a tough time speaking to the press as she was out of words time and time again during the course of the conference thereby also letting her frustrations out a couple of times with a few cuss words.
What did Iga Swiatek make of her loss against Jelena Ostapenko?
This is the fourth time that Iga Swiatek has lost agasint Jelena Ostapenko. In the four occasions that the Pole has played against the Latvian, she has always been outplayed which provides an example of how much this loss frustrated Swiatek. She talked about how there can be comparisons as she has always been dominated by Jelena She plays well against me. She said, “I mean, I don’t have any comparison because she always did that.”
Swiatek also stated how she was surprised with herself for failing to win the match despite winning the first set. She said, “But I’m just surprised that my level changed so drastically because usually when I play bad, I play bad at the beginning, then I kind of catch up or just problem-solve. This time it was totally the opposite. I don’t really know what happened with my game. I felt no control suddenly.”
