Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek was overwhelmed with joy after winning the 2023 China Open by defeating Liudmila Samsonova in the final. Iga recently lost her World No. 1 ranking to Belarusian player Aryna Sabalenka and her performances in the last few tournaments have been downright poor. Thus, this comeback means a lot to World No. 2, as was evident from her post-match press conference and on-court interview.
Iga Swiatek revealed that she was extremely proud of herself for winning the China Open as she had not expected to do so at the start of the tournament. “I’m happy that I won because, for sure, this is really big for me. Winning this title is something that I never would have thought at the beginning of the tournament about. I’m pretty proud of myself,” Iga said.
“Well, for sure you could feel that we are playing a final because it was a little bit tense, I would say. But I’m happy that I kind of adjusted to what Liudmila was playing. I wanted to really be consistent with what I wanted to do no matter how she’s doing,” added the 4-time Grand Slam winner.
Iga’s route to the trophy in the 2023 China Open was sensational. She defeated Caroline Garcia in the quarterfinal after a brilliant fight, Coco Gauff in the semi-fina,l and Samsonova in the final. Her wins over Gauff and Samsonova came in straight sets which was even more praiseworthy. The Polish international defeated the Russian 6-2, 6-2 in the final.
Iga Swiatek aims to regain her World No. 1 spot
A few days ago, Aryna Sabalenka replaced Iga Swiatek as the World No. 1 in WTA rankings after the Polish international’s early exit from the 2023 US Open. Iga had recently said that, although she aims to regain her World No. 1 spot, she had no rush to do that and want to develop as a player in the coming months.
Iga had said that her number one priority right now was to focus on the future and not defend something. However, the way she performed in the China Open, it seems like the 22-year-old is back in touch and if she keeps on performing like this, she might soon replace Aryna Sabalenka as the World No. 1 once again. It must be noted that Aryna herself is performing very poorly, and it will help Iga further.
