After an exciting 2023 season in women’s tennis, the WTA players look to kick off their 2024 season with the first Grand Slam of the year, i.e., the Australian Open.
World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, who won her maiden Grand Slam title in 2023 in the same tournament, will look to defend her title as she also aims to take the World No. 1 spot back from Iga Swiatek.
More interestingly, Naomi Osaka makes her much-awaited comeback at the Australian Open. She did not play for almost the entirety of 2023, as she was pregnant with her first baby. She is expected to appear in the Brisbane International ahead of the Australian Open, though, to prepare for the Grand Slam.
A list of all the players who are set to take part in the Australian Open has already been released. It shows promise for a potentially great tournament ahead.
Top 32 Women’s Singles Seeds at the Australian Open 2024
After winning the 2023 ATP Finals, Iga Swiatek finally regained her World No. 1 spot and ended the year at the top of the rankings.
She enters the tournament as the top seed, right above the second seed, Aryna Sabalenka, who would look to defend the title. Coco Gauff, who won her first Grand Slam in the 2023 US Open, is the third seed in the tournament, while Elena Rybakina and Jessica Pegula are the 4th and 5th seeds, respectively.
Ons Jabeur, Marketa Vondrousova, Karolina Muchova, Maria Sakkari, and Barbora Krejcikova are all in the top ten seeds. Vondrousova, who won the 2023 Wimbledon, will have the added responsibility of proving her mettle in another Grand Slam, as she has not really been able to keep up her performances after the Wimbledon.
Jelena Ostapenko (#13), Petra Kvitova (#14), Caroline Garcia (#20), Victoria Azarenka (#22), Elina Svitolina (#25) are also included in the list of seeded players in the 2024 Australian Open. Elina Svitolina missed a couple of tournaments in the latter half of 2023 while Caroline Garcia’s performance in late 2023 was not satisfactory.
Apart from that, players like Sofia Kenin, Marta Kostyuk, and Leylah Fernandez are also included in the list as unseeded players. However, eyes will be on two unseeded players who are making their return to the court at the Australian Open 2024, namely Paula Badosa and Naomi Osaka.
